AAQR: HydroTilt Live Wallpaper (free, $0.70)

Hydrotilt is basically a "fluid sim" where it pretends your phone has some sort of liquid behind it. In the free version it's just water.

In the paid version you get beer or champagne.

Tilt the phone and watch the liquid level react to the "sloshing around". It is... somewhat amusing.

Unplanned Outage (outrage?) of LWP round up, now 210 LWPs reviewed

After pruning and new updates, we're now back to 210 LWPs, and there are dozens more to be added!

There was an unplanned outage, because there was sort of a change on what links are allowed to one's own blog, even though the links are perfectly legitimate and on-topic. Oh well, thus are the rules.

AAQR: Canopy Live Wallpaper (free, $0.99)

Canopy Live Wallpaper use iterative graphics to give you the impression that you are forever falling through branches of a huge tree. It is rather cute, at least at first. There are few options like rainbow-colored branches and different backgrounds, but the animation, albeit quite smooth, gets boring rather quickly.

Pro version have leaves on the branches and other eye candy.

AAQR: Loop Wallpapers (free)

Loop Wallpapers is a collection of Android wallpapers specifically designed for "loop" desktops, where if you swipe right, from the right-most screen on the "desktop", you loop around to the leftmost screen. These wallpapers are "seamless" looping.

The wallpapers are not bad, but most of them tends to be on the bright side, very few dark ones. As I use a dark theme, that's annoying.

AAQR: Wizard Wars LWP (free, DO NOT DOWNLOAD)

Wizard Wars has a very retro look: a single "wizard" shoots "fireballs" at the bad guys. Unfortunately, this LWP includes the darn "AirPush" that pops up advertisements in your notification area. Do not download!

AAQR: Gravity Home (home launcher / live wallpaper)

Gravity Home is a weird hybrid of home launcher a live wallpaper.

Having a live wallpaper launch apps is not new. There have been several attempts before, but none quite like this one.

Basically, the icons of apps you choose become bouncing objects on the desktop, as they rotate and react to the screen orientation, and bounce off each other. Lean the phone over and they gather in the lower corner. And os on.

And if you manage to click on one of the apps icons, you'll launch that app.

Fun to play a trick on a friend... Make an empty screen with no icons, then load this live wallpaper, and drive your friend crazy.

AAQR: Shapes LWP

Image via WikipediaClearly an attempt to emulate the Star Trek: The Next Generation LCARS look, Shapes LWP looks quite bad, doesn't align with the grid densities, and fonts are not quite right. Even the color scheme looks off. Animations are somewhat reminiscent of LCARS, but overall, the feeling is just not there.

You shouldn't bother downloading this one. I tried it and it doesn't feel any different than existing launchers.

AAQR: DIY Your Galaxy LWP (free)

DIY Your Galaxy LWP is basically "choose your own slightly animated space-y sprite bitmaps.

Choose backgrounds, choose sprites, choose overlays, and so on. There are dozens of combinations. Not all of them are that good of course, but there are are decent ones.

I wouldn't say it's the best ever, and the animation is not that smooth. On the other hand, it is rather unique.

Worth a download, esp. since it's free.

AAQR: Free Mini Droid City LWP

Cute but minimally animated live wallpaper that basically has a lot of Android's walking around. The Androids get random costumes, and you can pick random backgrounds.

There are cute parts as you can choose among which costumes can appear. And if the two Androids meet, they share a drink (funny!)

Otherwise, there really isn't much to this. I guess the paid version gives you a few more choices

AAQR: SwiftKey X Beta

Swiftkey X beta is the next version of SwiftKey, with one of the best word correction and prediction engines on the market of Android. This version is even better. It has cloud-based help in the prediction, plus better installer and a few other tricks.

I've tried it, and it works pretty well. I own the original SwiftKey and I love it. You should try this.

AAQR: UC Browser

UC Browser is supposed to be Chinese Android Web Browser that have a lot of built-in links to websites. It supposedly has been vastly improved. Unfortunately, when I tried it, it just crashed as soon as I choose any link. I have an OG Droid running CM7. No particular reason why it would crash.

AAQR: Breakout Live Wallpaper

While it is related to the arcade game, it's not quite what you think. Think the screen divided into 16 boxes, each lined with pixel "bricks", and several 'balls' are bouncing inside the box, trying to break out. Yep, that's "breakout".

It's kinda cute, but it ain't quite right.

AAQR: MXHome Launcher

At over 7MB in size, MxHome is one of the largest home launchers ever (only LG Home beat it in terms of APK size). It also claims to be 3D and all that. However, in practice, this home launcher doesn't really have any outstanding feature. It is quite smooth, and it is theme compatible (of its own format). It has a sliding shelf (that can be opened from any home page) similar to Pandahome's "side drawers". However, all the items on the sliding shelf are pre-defined and un-customizable.

Overall, the home launcher is reminiscent vLauncher or similar iPhone launchers, having only 4 shortcuts at the bottom with big square icons. It doesn't feel that special, honest.  The themes are like 4+ MB each. Eeek.

Rating: try it, maybe?

AAQR: Shining Live Wallpaper Free / Shining Christmas Free (LWP)

This is yet another app with two names... The install / catalog name is Shining Live Wallpaper Free, but when you install it, it is Shining Christmas Free.

The LWP doesn't look that bad. It's basically "virtual windchimes", with various Christmas themed items hanging and free to rotate (help them along by a touch or two).

However, the amount of permissions asked for by this LWP makes me nervous, as it reads identity, phone state, GPS, and more.

I'd say skip it for now.

AAQR: Space Dream Lite LWP

It claim to be be "3D in space!" and all that. What it really is... multiple bitmaps slowly being zoomed and rotated. Sorry, but Maxelus's "Galaxy" series look a lot better, IMHO, of course.  (try Vortex Galaxy)

Not a real snake, but the snake PC game, where you try to control the snake head so you don't run into the walls of the field, or itself, while keep "eating" more dots. But the more you eat, the longer you grow... Imagine watching your Android play snake by itself

Mesmerize starts with a plasma-like color cycling randomizing screen that shifts the various colors. The stuff is not too flashy, yet not so slow to be boring. It doesn't seem to take up too much memory either.

Rating: worth trying, but a bit too close to "plasma" and other LWPs

Cartoony people walking about in front of your house in the 'burbs.

Looks like a scene from MySims, with people mowing laws, walking past with grocery bags, minivans moving slowly down the street, and so on, all in cartoony form.

Good? Not really. Cute? Sorta.
